When Celtic visited Kilmarnock last weekend, Ange Postecoglou opted for a front line of Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Jota. Consequently, Giorgos Giakoumakis started the game from the bench, but he came on as a second-half substitute.

Thanks to the goals from Kyogo, Jota and Moritz Jenz, Celtic had already taken a 3-0 lead in the match by then, and a Kilmarnock comeback was next to impossible. Thus, Postecoglou’s side could have taken their foot off the gas and played safe. Instead, the Hoops pushed for more. Carl Starfelt notched up the fourth, and then Giakoumakis scored a spectacular overhead kick to make it 5-0. The Greek striker certainly has a penchant for the extraordinary.

Leaving VVV-Venlo in the summer of 2021, after having topped the Eredivisie scoring charts, Giakoumakis joined Celtic. The move has proven to be a huge success since then.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Giakoumakis has scored 18 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions for Celtic till now. Thus, there are calls for him to start more games this season and he certainly deserves it. In fact, his performances seem to be catching the eyes of clubs down South.

Celtic star Giakoumakis unlikely to leave

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Giakoumakis has been approached by Premier League clubs in the last few days but Celtic have no intention of parting ways with the striker and he is happy at Parkhead as well:

Giakoumakis is undoubtedly an incredibly effective forward and deserves to play more. But with the Hoops set to take part in the Champions League campaign, he is bound to get more minutes. It would be interesting to see whether he can cement his position in Postecoglou’s first-choice line-up or not.

The challenge for Postecoglou is to find a way to start both Kyogo and Giakoumakis at the same time, as both of them deserve to play.
