When the Rangers signed Aaron Ramsey at the start of the year, many had claimed that the Ibrox side had done enough to finish any hope that Celtic had of winning the Premiership title. The Welsh midfielder arrived on loan from Juventus till the end of the season and was expected to take Scottish football by storm.

We all know how that turned out for the Rangers. Not only did Celtic end up winning the league title by a comfortable four points, but Ramsey also ended up missing the decisive penalty kick in the final of the UEFA Europa League, to hand Eintracht Frankfurt the trophy.

Thus, it would be safe to say that the decision to bring in Ramsey from Juventus on loan proved to be a huge flop for the Ibrox club.

Recently, Celtic have been linked with a loan move for Chelsea’s Ross Barkley though and many fans have been quick to compare the potential move to the one the Rangers pulled off to bring Ramsey to Ibrox.

Celtic told to sign the Chelsea star despite Ramsey comparisons

Frank McAvennie does not appear to believe in the comparisons between Barkley and Ramsey though, and actually wants to see the Chelsea star join his former club. As reported by Football Insider, he said:

"“I think big clubs like Celtic need big players and Ross Barkley is a big player.“He’s a quality player and I think it would be great for Celtic, great for Scottish football if a player like that comes up. It’s not like Aaron Ramsey who came from Juventus and was injured a lot, Barkley is fit.“I think he enjoys his football. I’m a great believer, if you’re not getting a game, you’ve got to go and play football.“Why wouldn’t he come to Celtic? They’re in the Champions League, they’ve started magnificently in the league. It would be great to get him on board.”"

While coming through at Everton, Barkley was considered as the next big thing in English football and had made a brilliant start to his senior career as well. Unfortunately for him though, his form has faded away a lot in recent years.

Right now, he finds himself as nothing but a fringe player at Chelsea and with first-team chances slim, he is expected to head out on loan this summer.

While many fans do not seem to be excited by the prospect of Barkley potentially joining Celtic, if Ange Postecoglou can get the best out of him, like he did with Tom Rogic last season, the Englishman could be a spectacular addition to this team.
