Brendan Rodgers reveals key reason why he left Celtic
Brendan Rodgers is one of the most successful managers in Celtic history. Not only did the Hoops win a lot of trophies during his spell at the club, but they also were able to break a number of records and establish themselves as one of the most dominant club sides ever.
It was under the Northern Irish manager that the Hoops were transformed into the Treble-winning machine, who would go on to win twelve domestic titles on the trot, seven of them coming under Rodgers’ management.
But Rodgers does not get the credit that he deserves, simply because of the manner of his exit. He would end up leaving the club in the middle of the 2018/19 season, in order to join Leicester City in the Premier League. A lot of the fans have not forgiven him for that to this day.
It seems that Celtic’s lack of investment into the squad was a key reason behind Rodgers’ eventual Parkhead exit. As reported by Football Scotland, when asked why he left Glasgow, the Leicester City manager told the Kammy & Ben’s Proper Football Podcast:
"“I think we had qualified for the Champions League two seasons running. We’d won the Double Treble, we’d brought great investment into the club.“But I felt to make the next steps in Europe, we needed investment. It was a little bit of… I don’t think the club had that investment to put in, to compete at that level. It was also the challenge. It was such a difficult thing to leave because of the friends, the club and everything.“But the number one thing for me in my life is to take on a challenge. And I felt that it wasn’t the ideal time to leave, but where I’d left the club from when I came in, the club had won seven trophies on the spin with the records and everything that we’d done.”"
Rodgers names key reason why he left Celtic
Rodgers has enjoyed a great time at Leicester City as well, having led them to an FA Cup and a Community Shield. During this period of time, he has also been linked with clubs like Manchester City, Barcelona, Manchester United and many others.
Ironically though, there is a lack of investment at Leicester City in the current summer transfer window.
On the other hand, key players like Wesley Fofana, Youri Tielemans, James Maddison and others are being linked with moves away from the club.
Also, with the rise of clubs like West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United in recent times, Rodgers might have a tough time guiding the Foxes to a top eight finish this season.
