Reliable journalist delivers Ross Barkley to Celtic update

Celtic have recently been linked with a potential move for Chelsea’s Ross Barkley this summer. The English midfielder could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge, having failed to break into Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans, and several clubs are rumoured to hold an interest in his signature, including the Hoops.

Celtic could do with another option in the middle of the park. Nir Bitton left at the end of last season while Ismaila Soro has departed on loan. James McCarthy is rumoured to be on his way out while there are question marks over both Yosuke Ideguchi and Aaron Mooy.

Someone like Barkley would be a big name signing. He has played for three of England’s biggest teams in the form of Chelsea, Everton and Aston Villa, and at one point of time was considered as the next big thing for the national team. It is clear that he has not fulfilled his potential but he is still just 28 years of age.

Yet, there might be nothing to the rumour after all. Mark Hendry wrote in Football Scotland, that Barkley is not on Celtic’s radar and the links are wide of the mark.

While Barkley might have been a statement signing, it is safe to say that most fans have not been keen on the idea of bringing in the Chelsea midfielder.

He has not been in great form in recent years, after showing so much promise during his earlier career at Everton. Right now, he is pretty much on the periphery of Chelsea’s squad.

While Celtic might not make a move for Barkley this summer, they still do need to make another addition in midfield because there are problems there which need to be addressed, especially with Champions League group stage football to play and the Premiership crown to defend.
