Celtic could pull off transfer masterstroke by signing Chelsea star
Celtic have already made quite a few additions to their squad this summer and look in a very good position right now in terms of their squad, especially compared to this time last year. At the same time though, one has to remember that the expectations are much higher this time around. They have the Scottish crown to defend against the Rangers while also returning to the Champions League group stage after many years.
One area that they could do with more options in is their midfield. Nir Bitton left at the end of last season, while Ismaila Soro has departed on loan this summer. James McCarthy is being heavily linked with a Parkhead exit as well, while Yosuke Ideguchi continues to struggle with injuries. Aaron Mooy has been brought in but is yet to impress in a Celtic shirt, although he must be given time to get up to speed.
While it might be a controversial opinion, Ross Barkley, who has been linked with Celtic recently, could actually be a very good signing for the Hoops.
Barkley has been on the fringes of Thomas Tuchel’s squad and it is believed that he could depart Chelsea this summer, with a number of clubs rumoured to hold an interest, including Celtic.
Why Barkley can be a very good signing for Celtic
First of all, Barkley has some top level experience. He has played for three of the biggest teams in the Premier League in Chelsea, Everton and Aston Villa.
While coming through the youth ranks, he was one of the most highly rated players in the world and considered as the next big hope of the England national team. There is no question about the fact that it has not quite worked out for him.
But there is no question about his talent either, and Ange Postecoglou has already shown that he can get the best out of underperforming players. Jota is a prime example.
Also, Barkley can play as a number 8 as well as a number 10. Celtic do not have an abundance of options to fill in those areas at the moment due to a combination of injuries and exits, and could do with someone with his ability, especially with the number of games coming up.
If Celtic can get Barkley on loan or for a very small transfer fee, and wages are not a problem, then he could be a very good signing.
