Celtic enquired about £3.5 million Austrian defender

Celtic have goals all over the pitch and nothing has proven this better than the first two games of the season. In the first game, Stephen Welsh scored the opener against Aberdeen. In the second game, Moritz Jenz put the Hoops in front against Ross County, just when it looked like Ange Postecoglou’s side were set to drop points away from home. On the other hand, Carl Starfelt is yet to make his return to the pitch due to an injury but he was a regular starter last season.

Thus, there seems to be some genuine competition at centre-back right now, and that is a nice problem to have.

It looks like there is one defender that Celtic were interested in though, who they could not sign this summer. And that is Austrian youth international and under-21 captain, Emanuel Aiwu.

As reported by Glasgow Live, Aiwu recently completed a £3.5 million move to Cremonese, and he said:

"“There were enquiries from Mainz and Celtic and there was interest from clubs in Turkey and Russia, but Cremonese impressed me the most when we spoke – they showed they really wanted me.“I loved my time at Rapid, but Serie A is an absolute top league, I will be challenged here every week, I’m looking forward to this opportunity.”"

Aiwu is a highly-rated defender and he could have been a solid addition to this Celtic side. But it is safe to say that Postecoglou must be happy with the options that he has available to him at this point of time.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, who joined permanently this summer from Tottenham Hotspur, looks almost certain to start. On the other hand, there might be some healthy competition for the other spot in the starting XI between Starfelt, Welsh and Jenz.

Things are not looking up for Christopher Jullien though. He already had a tough time last season and made just a solitary appearance, and now, it looks like opportunities could be even more limited for the Frenchman. Thus, a move away from Parkhead might be the best step for all parties involved at this point of time. Let’s see if it ends up happening or not.
