James McCarthy has been linked with a move away from Celtic this summer. The former Everton star joined the club last summer on a free transfer. There were doubts about the move from the very beginning though. He had struggled with injury problems in recent years. What was even more confusing was the fact that the Hoops handed him a four-year deal. Since then, he has barely made an impact.

It is quite clear that McCarthy remains a part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad. But, at the same time, it is also evident that he is not a starter for the Scottish giants.

Still, it is a bit of a surprise that he is being linked with a move away from Celtic already, just a year after joining.

Postecoglou was asked about the rumours linking McCarthy away from the club, before their game against Ross County. The manager seemed to play them down although he did not give a definitive answer. As reported by The Herald, he said:

"“It is not on my radar, mate. I am just dealing with what is in front me.“Macca (McCarthy) is still training with the squad, and beyond that, there is nothing on my radar.”"

That does seem like a bit of a non-answer. But at the same time, Postecoglou did not rule out the possibility of McCarthy leaving, which one would think he would have done if the move was completely off the table.

Nevertheless, in a season where Celtic will be going through a hectic schedule that includes Champions  League group stage matches, the 31-year-old could provide the team with some much-needed depth in their midfield department, as well as experience.

Celtic have already lost a lot of experience in recent times, having seen both Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton leave at the end of last season. Now, McCarthy leaving could be another blow in that regard. But on the pitch, it is safe to say that he is not contributing much at the moment.
