It is Leicester City who have recently been linked with a move for a Celtic star, in the form of Matt O’Riley. At this point of time, that looks unlikely though. The Danish youth international arrived at Parkhead in January and is already viewed as a key player for Ange Postecoglou’s side, especially with Tom Rogic leaving at the end of the previous campaign.

While Celtic will be hoping to hold onto O’Riley, at the same time, they should consider making a move for one of Leicester City’s defensive midfielders.

The player in question is Nampalys Mendy. And a move for the Senegal international would make a lot of sense, as Celtic are in need of a defensive midfielder at this point of time, having seen Nir Bitton leave at the end of last season and Ismaila Soro on loan this summer.

It is no secret that Leicester City need to let go of some of their players this summer. With Mendy 30 years of age and his contract running out next summer, it might be the perfect opportunity for Celtic to test the resolve of Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Celtic should make move for Leicester City defensive midfielder

Someone like Mendy would not be a glamourous signing, but it could be a very sensible one. He has plenty of top level experience, having played in both the Premier League and Ligue 1.

Not only has he found success at the club level, but with Senegal as well, as he won the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Mendy is not a physically imposing figure in the middle of the park, who will win header after header. He has a lot of great qualities though. He can win back the ball consistently and is also very adept at recycling the ball around, even though he is not the most creative of midfielders.

When he arrived at Leicester City, he was viewed as the successor to N’Golo Kante. And while he did not come close to that level of success, the similarities in their playing style is clear to see.
