Celtic have made quite a few additions to their squad this summer. One area that they have not been particularly prolific in signing players in is their midfield. That does come as a bit of a surprise though. Both Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton left at the end of last season. That did not mean only a loss of quality in the middle of the park but experience as well, as they had both spent nearly a decade at Parkhead.

Ismaila Soro left on loan as well. On the other hand, the only midfielder that Celtic have signed this summer till now is Aaron Mooy. And there are question marks surrounding him as well.

Now, another midfielder has been linked with a move away from the club, in the form of James McCarthy. The former Everton star arrived last summer on a free transfer and it was a major surprise when the Hoops decided to hand him a four-year deal.

It is safe to say that it has not worked out for him at Parkhead till now. As a result, rumours have suggested that he could be looking to make an exit already. And as tweeted out by Celticunderground, the suggestion is that Sunderland might be keen on McCarthy.

Sunderland might be keen on struggling Celtic star

According to stats from Transfermarkt, McCarthy made 22 appearances last season across all competitions, and played 739 minutes of football.

Yet, it is not hard to understand why a club like Sunderland might be interested in him. McCarthy has plenty of top level experience of English football. On the other hand, The Black Cats have just managed to win back promotion to the Championship and will surely be looking hold onto their place.

As a result, someone like McCarthy could prove to be a solid signing for Sunderland. On the other hand, if he does leave, Celtic would surely need to sign a midfielder.
