Celtic are already guaranteed a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage, thanks to winning the Premiership title last season. That is a spot that a lot of the Rangers fans had taken for granted at the start of the previous campaign, as they were the heavy favourites to win the league, having finished 25 points ahead of the Hoops in the 2020/21 season.

Instead, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side will now have to navigate their way through a qualification process, if they are to make Europe’s elite competition. And they have not made the best start in that regard.

The Ibrox club travelled to Belgium to take on Royale Union SG in the first leg of their third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and were handed a convincing 2-0 defeat. On another day, that scoreline could have ended up much more one-sided than it did, as the Belgian club were the much better side.

Celtic hero, Chris Sutton, has remained a very popular figure amongst the fans even after his retirement, thanks to his career in the football media. And the Rangers fans were clearly not happy with his tweet after their defeat at the hands of Royale Union SG:

The fact of the matter is that it would be a mistake to count the Rangers out just yet. As we saw in the Europa League last season, they look like a much better side at Ibrox and have experience of turning ties around.

At the same time though, they have lost two key players in the form of Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey this summer.

One also has to wonder whether last season was just a one-off run from them and not really a parameter for how good they actually are.
