Celtic have made some excellent additions to their squad this summer and look ready to defend their Scottish crown against the Rangers, while also making their return to the Champions League group stage after many years. There are a few areas which still remain a worry for the Hoops though and one of them appears to be their defensive midfield.

Nir Bitton left at the end of last season. He had been an important member of Ange Postecoglou’s side last season and was brought off the bench consistently in order to see out games. At this point of time, the Hoops do not have that profile of player in their squad.

Aaron Mooy has been brought in but he is not a traditional defensive midfielder. Thus, most fans believe that the club should make another signing there. But instead, one of the players who can feature there could be headed for the exit door.

As tweeted out by Fraser FletcherJames McCarthy is looking to move after a difficult time at Celtic. The Republic of Ireland international is disappointed with how things have gone and seeking a new challenge. There is interest and some offers are being prepared.

Celtic player could be set to make surprise Parkhead exit this summer

There were always doubts over a move for McCarthy. In his prime, he was an excellent player but after suffering injuries, he had been nowhere near the top of his game in recent years.

Celtic decided to not only bring him in as a free agent but also handed him a four-year deal. It made little sense as he was 30 years of age at that point, with a long injury history.

It would be safe to say that it has not worked out for McCarthy at Parkhead but still, not many fans expected him to depart after just one year at Celtic. Especially since the Hoops have a clear lack of options in that area of the pitch right now.

If McCarthy does leave, one would have to think that Celtic would make another addition in the middle of the park.
