Celtic made a winning start to their Premiership campaign this season, by beating Aberdeen 2-0. It was not the best performance by any stretch of the imagination but Ange Postecoglou’s side got the job done on the day. There are still areas where they need to improve though and one of them is widely believed to be defensive midfield, which has been left exposed by the departure of Nir Bitton.

While Bitton was not a regular starter for the club, he did make a lot of appearances off the bench, as someone who could help see out games. At the moment, Celtic do not have a player like that. Aaron Mooy has been brought in this summer but he is not really a defensive midfielder.

One player that Celtic had been linked with recently is Manchester City defensive midfielder, Claudio Gomes. Till now, those rumours have led nowhere but journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that it is one to keep an eye on, as the two club have good links.

As reported by GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said:

"“That’s one to keep an eye on. I think Celtic and Manchester City do have good links they have had players go from Manchester City to Celtic in the past as well. And then they do have links through the City Group where Ange Postecoglou was working before he moved to Celtic as well so yeah, there’s obviously good links there.”"

Celtic could potentially make a move for Manchester City midfielder

It is true that Celtic have good links with Manchester City and the City Football Group. But then, the same could have applied when the club were being linked with Vinicius Souza of Lommel SK. The Brazilian midfielder ended up joining Espanyol on loan instead.

Now, even if the Hoops make an attempt to sign Gomes, there will be serious question marks surrounding the move.

Coming through the youth ranks at PSG, he was one of the most highly-rated talents in France and represented the national team at several youth levels. Things have not gone his way since joining Manchester City though. The 22-year-old has only made a few appearances for the club and his only real taste of senior level football has come at Barnsley in the Championship.
