Chris Sutton points out big positive from Celtic win vs Aberdeen

Celtic started their Premiership title defence with a 2-0 win over Aberdeen in front of an electric Parkhead crowd. Stephen Welsh opened the scoring early on, to settle any nerves that might have been there. And Jota then scored a tremendous goal from distance in the second half to seal all three points for the Hoops.

While most fans would agree that Celtic should have found the back of the net a few more times, ultimately, it is the win that matters the most and they got the job done.

There is a long season ahead and it is about building up momentum from here on forward. There are areas where they can improve further but at the same time, there are also certain positives to take from the season opener against Aberdeen.

One of them is the fact that Welsh managed to score a header from a corner. That has been a rare sight for Celtic in recent years. Chris Sutton tweeted out:

Celtic’s ineffectiveness from corners has been one of their major weaknesses in recent seasons, even when they have won titles. If they can improve upon that aspect of their game, it could help take this team to the next level.

Welsh was the man who got the goal and it, along with the clean sheet on the day, will do his chances good moving forward.

The Celtic academy graduate was not a regular part of the starting XI last season with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt forming a formidable duo in the heart of defence.

Unfortunately, Starfelt is out of action right now with an injury he picked up while representing the Swedish national team. This does open up the opportunity for Welsh to impress and stake a claim for a spot in the starting XI, and he made a very good start against Aberdeen in that respect.
