Celtic loan failure returns to Australia two years later

Not all loan spells at Celtic work out as well as those for Cameron Carter-Vickers or Jota. One signing from the Brendan Rodgers era has found that out exactly, and he now finds himself back in Australia, after failing to establish himself in the European game, having spent time not only at Parkhead, but at several more clubs as well to very little success.

Back in August 2018, Celtic signed an exciting talent in the form of Daniel Arzani from Manchester City on a two-year loan deal. The Australia was predicted to have a very bright future.

In a coincidental link to today’s Celtic, Arzani arrived having been awarded the Harry Kewell Medal as Australia’s best male under 23 player at that time. He also appeared for Australia in their 2018 World Cup squad where he was the youngest player in the tournament.

Breaking into the Hoops’ squad proved difficult, as it was the season when Celtic won their second of what ended up being four consecutive trebles. So competition for places was pretty strong. Also, he ended up suffering a serious injury.

Former Celtic loan player returns to Australia

Arzani left Celtic in the summer of 2020 and while Manchester City retained him as a player, he continued to struggle away on loan at different clubs. Finally, he has returned to Australia to join A-League side Macarthur FC on a permanent basis.

As reported by ABC News, Arzani said about the move:

"“Being a new club, it’s exciting especially to be working under someone like Dwight Yorke and the rest of the staff here at the Bulls.“I can’t wait to be back on the pitch and to get the season started.”"

For Arzani’s sake, let’s hope the return to Australia helps him establish himself at the senior level of football and finally see him fulfil his potential.

Despite his early struggles, Arzani is still just 23 years of age and has plenty of time on his hands to get his career back on track. If he can return to form at Macarthur FC, maybe we might see him back in Europe one day again.
