New Celtic signing Aaron Mooy makes surprise admission
Aaron Mooy was linked with a move to Celtic last summer, when he was at Shanghai Port, but it did not materialise back then. The Hoops have gotten their man this time around though, as the Australian international midfielder has arrived on a free transfer. There is a lot of interest around the signing and how it will end up working for the club.
There are both pros and cons to the move. On one hand, Mooy is someone who Ange Postecoglou will know well from his time as the manager of the Australian national team. He is a flexible player, who can play as both a 6 and an 8, and has all the attributes required to be a success in this system. He also has some top level experience from his time at Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion, and has played in Scotland in the past, for St Mirren.
On the other hand though, Mooy is set to turn 32 soon and he has not played a lot of football over the past couple of years.
In fact, he has admitted himself that it will take him time to get up to speed. As reported by The Scottish Sun, Mooy said:
"“It was obviously an amazing time for me and for Australia to qualify for the World Cup.“I hadn’t actually touched the ball since then. I only just started training two days ago.“I did some fitness testing the other day, and then on Thursday it was just some football with the reserve team.“It was nice to touch the ball again, but you need time to get up to speed and try to be in the best shape possible.”"
New Celtic signing Mooy makes surprise fitness admission
This will be a bit of a worry for Celtic to say the least as the start of the new Premiership campaign is just a little over a week away.
One can only hope that Mooy is back to full fitness as soon as possible, because Celtic need him this season.
They saw two key players in Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton depart the club at the end of last season. Not only will Celtic miss their quality in the middle of the park but their experience as well. Other than Mooy, no other reinforcement has been made in midfield this summer though.
