Rangers appear to have a long-term Celtic target in their sights to replace Calvin Bassey, who seems to be headed for Dutch giants, Ajax, this summer on a permanent basis. It looks like the Ibrox side will receive a transfer fee around £18.7 million plus add-ons for the Nigerian international. Now, to be very honest, that is great piece of business for a player they had brought in on a free transfer just a couple of years back.

But at the same time, one must remember that the Rangers are losing one of their key players from last season and will need to replace him.

And as reported by The Guardian, Liverpool’s Ben Davies is poised to join Rangers for a transfer fee about £4 million to replace Bassey.

Davies has been at Liverpool since early 2021 but has never managed to make a single competitive appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side till now and is expected to be on his way out this summer. He spent the previous campaign out on loan at Sheffield United.

Rangers set to replace Bassey with long-time Celtic transfer target

Now, many Celtic fans will remember that Davies had come very, very close to signing a pre-contract agreement with the Hoops in January of 2021, before Liverpool swooped in at the last moment and signed him on a permanent basis from Preston North End, when the Reds were going through a defensive crisis.

The links with Celtic have never quite gone away though and he was rumoured with a potential move to Parkhead this summer as well.

But now, it looks like it is Ibrox where he will be headed in a £4 million transfer move. To be frank, it is hard to see Celtic shelling out that kind of a transfer fee for a player who would most probably be cover for Carl Starfelt, especially after not making a single appearance for Liverpool in a year-and-a-half.
