Steven Fletcher is someone who has been linked with a move to Celtic several times through the course of his career without it ever materialising. The Scottish forward spent the majority of his time down South but has made the move back this summer in order to join Dundee United, and now that he is 35 years of age, his chances of making a move to Parkhead are virtually nil.

He has come close to sealing a Celtic transfer in the past though and the time when he came closest might be much more recent than most fans would imagine.

The summer of 2020 is not one that is fondly remembered by Celtic fans and for good reason, because very little positive came out of it and it was one of the major reasons behind the disaster that the 2020/21 campaign would ultimately turn out to be.

Fletcher had been linked with a move to Celtic back in the summer of 2020 and it looks like that was the closest he ever came to ever really making the move. He would ultimately end up joining Stoke City. As reported by Football Scotland, he said:

"“Earlier on in my career when I was linked with Celtic I didn’t have much to do with it.“At that age you just leave it to agents and all that, only finding things out when they’re pretty much done.“So I don’t know how close it came back in the early days, but before I signed for Stoke that was the closest a move to Celtic came.“It didn’t happen in the end and I’ll tell that story one day.“But I was linked with Celtic a lot over the years.“So much so I think their fans were sick of hearing about it!”"

Fletcher admits that he came close to Celtic move

Ultimately, the move to Celtic never ended up happening. But to be honest, the Hoops ended up signing Albian Ajeti that summer instead and it is safe to say that signing Fletcher might have actually turned better.

The Swiss striker has failed to make any impact at Parkhead and is expected to depart the club this summer, if they can find a new home for him. It remains to be seen how things turn out.

Fletcher was 33 years of age at that point of time and was coming off of a decent spell with Sheffield Wednesday. While it is unlikely his arrival would have changed the outcome of the campaign, it certainly would not have made things any worse.
