Celtic are in immediate need of a defensive midfielder. Scott Brown left the club last summer. Nir Bitton also brought an end to his run at Parkhead, at the end of the previous campaign. And now, Ismaila Soro has departed on loan as well. This leaves Ange Postecoglou with very few options there. While Yosuke Ideguchi and James McCarthy can play the role, neither has been very impressive for the Hoops till now.

A defensive midfielder could prove to be even more important for Celtic in the upcoming campaign simply because of the fact that they have Champions League group stage football to deal with, where they will come up against tougher opposition and will need someone who can break up play in the middle of the park as a result.

One player that they should target this summer, most probably on loan, is Manchester United’s James Garner.

Garner spent the previous season on loan at Nottingham Forest and did a great job, as the club made it back to the Premier League after a long time, while the player enhanced his own reputation as well.

Celtic should target move for impressive Manchester United youngster

There is very little doubt about Garner’s talent or potential. Also at 21 years of age, he has plenty of time on his hands to get even better in the future.

But for all of that, there does not seem to be a lot of hope that he will get regular chances for Manchester United next season, especially with the club under tremendous pressure to deliver titles after five straight trophyless campaigns.

Garner still has quite a bit of time left on his current deal though and as a result, another loan spell could be on the cards and could open the door for Celtic to make a move.

Someone like Garner could be a solid addition to Celtic. On the other hand, the player would get the chance to play Champions League football at Parkhead and as we saw last season, Manchester United are not opposed to the idea of sending their players to the Scottish Premiership.
