Celtic handed sensational Alexandro Bernabei boost

Celtic are believed to have shelled out a transfer fee around £3.75 million in order to sign Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus this summer. In the process, he became the first Argentine player in the history of the club as well, which is a surprising bit of trivia for sure. It is safe to say that there are lofty expectations from him.

Left-back has been a position of concern for Celtic for the past few years, ever since Kieran Tierney departed Parkhead to join Arsenal. While Greg Taylor’s performances last season were cause for optimism, the Scottish international needs competition badly, with Liam Scales having left on loan this summer and Boli Bolingoli expected to leave as well.

One would be hoping that Bernabei can provide that competition. The 21-year-old was very impressive during his time in Argentina with Lanus and hopefully he will adjust to the game in Scotland quickly. There is some good news for Celtic surrounding his suspension situation as well.

As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, Bernabei is free to feature for Celtic at the start of the season as his two-game ban in Argentina will not be held up here. The left-back was sent off for headbutting Colon’s Augusto Schott in his last appearance for Lanus. The necessary documentation has arrived from the Argentinian FA at Hampden though and there is no notification of any sporting sanctions applied, so the player won’t be suspended in Scotland.

It goes without saying that that is great news for Celtic, as it looks like Bernabei will be available from the start of the season.

If the suspension had been held up, he would have ended up missing the Flag Day game at home against Aberdeen and then an away trip to Ross County.

Now, it remains to be seen if he is a starter from the very beginning of the season or Taylor will hold on to his spot for the time being.
