Christopher Jullien was one of the most important players at Celtic a few years back. He had enjoyed a great debut campaign with the Hoops, after a big money move in the summer of 2019, and even ended up scoring the League Cup-winning goal for the club against the Rangers in that season. Since then, things have gone completely downhill for the Frenchman though.

He was already dealing with fitness issues in the 2020/21 campaign and then would end up suffering a serious injury, which kept him out of action for the entirety of 2021. He made his return earlier this year but has not been able to break into Ange Postecoglou’s plans, making a single appearance till now and that too off the bench.

Thus, a move away from Parkhead might be the best step forward for all parties involved at this point of time and it had looked like a move to Schalke could have been on the cards for Jullien. But now, those hopes have been handed a blow.

As reported by BILD, Schalke is set to sign Maya Yoshida on a one-year deal with an option to extend.

Schalke had Ko Itakura on loan last season from Manchester City, a player that Celtic had been linked with for a while, but the German club could not sign him on a permanent basis, as a result of the current financial situation.

As a result, Jullien was believed to have been someone who they were looking at as an alternative. It is believed that the Frenchman even underwent a medical with Schalke but could not agree on terms.

There were still hopes that the two parties could come to an agreement but with Schalke now signing another centre-back in Yoshida, it does not feel like they would still go after Jullien this summer.
