The Sydney Super Cup looked set to be one of the most interesting chapters in the rivalry between Celtic and the Rangers, as the two Glasgow giants were scheduled to face off against each other in a friendly away in Australia later this year, in November. It was believed to be a financially lucrative deal for both clubs.

It was being touted by many as the ‘Ange Postecoglou Homecoming Tour’ and Celtic were also rumoured to be receiving the lion’s share of the participation fee. A lot of the Rangers supporters did not like this though and protests were organised, which ultimately led to the Ibrox club deciding to pull out of the friendly tournament.

Celtic are still set to travel to Australia later this year to participate in the Sydney Super Cup though and as a result, the organisers will need to find a suitable replacement for the Rangers.

While they will not be able to replace the sheer spectacle that is the Glasgow Derby, they do seem to have their eyes on a big name replacement. As reported by Kick360, Everton appear to be in talks to replace Rangers, potentially marking their first tour of Australia since 2010 when Tim Cahill was with the Toffees.

While Everton might have had to endure a very tough 2021/22 campaign and narrowly avoided relegation, one cannot forget that they are one of the biggest teams in the Premier League.

Everton are one of the only six clubs to never be relegated from the Premier League. In fact, they were last relegated from the top flight of English football in 1950/51. The Toffees also have some big names in their ranks, including manager Frank Lampard.

Thus, if Celtic did end up facing Everton in Australia later this year, it would be a glamour tie between two of the biggest clubs in all of football.
