Celtic suffer big blow in chase to sign Aberdeen player

The story of Celtic’s summer transfer window has been extremely promising so far. They have already completed some significant moves and are on the brink of making more. The overall situation at Parkhead suggests that they are fully focused on assembling a team good enough to challenge the heavyweights in the Champions League next season.

One of the players who is believed to have interested Ange Postecoglou and his staff in recent months is Connor Barron. The Aberdeen youngster returned to Pittodrie from an impressive loan spell with Kelty Hearts last January. After that, he had a stellar end to the season with the Dons, where he made quite the impression.

At the age of just 19, Barron is emerging as a promising prospect for manager Jim Goodwin at Aberdeen. Postecoglou is rumoured to like profile of the midfielder and could be looking to bring him to Parkhead in the near future.

There have been suggestions that Celtic also sent scouts to monitor the player in the Scotland U21s’ game against Belgium.

Celtic appear to have been handed a blow in their chase for Barron though as Aberdeen manager, Jim Goodwin, has hinted that he might end up extending his deal with Aberdeen. As reported by Press and Journal, he said:

"“Negotiations are ongoing.“We are in quite a safe place at the moment with that one as Connor has a couple of years left.“Both Connor and his family realise the opportunity that has been given here at Aberdeen.“In my experience those kind of negotiations with young players that have come through the academy, they are never too difficult.“It should be done pretty smoothly if everybody is sensible about the negotiation process.”"

Barron has a contract at Aberdeen until the summer of 2024 right now. If he does end up signing an extension, it will raise his stock and transfer value further at the same time.

Staying on at Aberdeen might also make sense for the teenager, as he is much more likely to get first-team chances there than he would at a club like Celtic, where the competition for places is extremely high, no matter the position on the pitch.
