It is finally official, Celtic have signed Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus. For the last several days, rumours had suggested that everything had been agreed between the clubs and the Argentine left-back had also successfully undergone his medical. Now, the announcement has been made and everything is over the line.
Left-back has been viewed as an area of concern for Celtic for years now, ever since Kieran Tierney left in the summer of 2019 in a Scottish record transfer to join Arsenal. Several players have been brought in to fill the void, but nobody has been able to do it.
Greg Taylor was impressive last season but he needs competition, especially with Liam Scales having left on loan and Boli Bolingoli expected to head out of Parkhead as well. Fans will be hoping that Bernabei will be able to provide that.
Bernabei has joined the club on a five-year deal and as reported by Celtic’s official website, the Argentine said:
"“I’m very happy to be here and I feel grateful to the club for giving me this opportunity.“I feel proud to be playing in Europe because it was one of my dreams and I’m excited to train with and play with my new team-mates.“The stadium is just incredible. The people, the club, team-mates, and the coaching staff are all incredible.“I’m very excited and happy and I can’t wait to be playing in the Champions League. I’ve heard that the people are crazy, so I can’t wait to sense that feeling and emotion in Celtic Park.”"
Bernabei has explained why he has joined Celtic
Celtic have done a wonderful job when it comes to recruiting players, ever since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager. The former Australian national team boss has shown that he has a tremendous eye for picking out players who can fit into his system and thrive. Bernabei has all the attributes required to add his name to that list.
Bernabei has rapid pace, dribbling ability, can get past his man, has quality in the final third of the pitch and can come up with a goal as well from time to time. Despite being just 21 years of age, the Argentine has plenty of top level experience as well from his time at Lanus.
Celtic are believed to have shelled out a £3.75 million transfer fee to sign Bernabei. That is a significant figure for the Hoops and let’s hope that he can justify that figure.
