Celtic do not need to undergo a major overhaul this summer like they did the last time around. Yet, there are still quite a few positions in the squad which could do with a few reinforcements. Defensive midfield is one such area where the Hoops appear to be weak at the moment, as a result of recent departures and the struggles of players currently in the squad.

Long-time club captain, Scott Brown, left last summer. Nir Bitton would call time on his nearly decade-long Parkhead career at the end of last season. On the other hand, the likes of James McCarthy and Yosuke Ideguchi have struggled since their arrival and Ismaila Soro is being linked with a move away from Celtic, after failing to break into Postecoglou’s first-team plans.

As a result, it is safe to say that Celtic will need to sign another defensive midfielder this summer and they have been linked with Vinicius Souza of Lommel SK and Alfa Semedo of Vitoria Guimaraes recently but now, it looks like another name has emerged on their radar.

As reported by Foot Mercato, Celtic and Udinese both appear to be interested in FC Metz defensive midfielder Amadou Mbengue.

Mbengue started the 2021/22 campaign with the FC Metz B team but managed to get into the senior team over course of the season.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Mbengue made 13 appearances for FC Metz last season, which combined for 694 minutes of football.

FC Metz would go on to be relegated from Ligue 1 last season. On the other hand, Mbengue’s current deal with the club is believed to be running out this summer, as a result, he will be available as a free agent.

The links with Celtic are surprising to say the least, because going into a Champions League season, one would expect the club to be linked with more experienced players. But at the same time, the Hoops have done very well when it comes to scouting talent since the arrival of Postecoglou as manager.
