Left-back has been viewed as an area of weakness for Celtic for years now, ever since Kieran Tierney left the club to join Arsenal in a Scottish record move. Since then, the Hoops have featured several players there, with very little success. Now, Greg Taylor did show signs of improvement last season and is starting to become an important member of the squad, but still, the club are expected to make an addition there this summer.

Rumours had suggested that they were closing in on a move for Lanus left-back, Alexandro Bernabei.

The 21-year-old has plenty of experience under his belt of playing for the Lanus senior team and has represented Argentina at the youth level as well. He is rapid and seems like a threat going forward, and would bring something very different to the table to what Taylor does.

While initially it was believed that a move was close and could happen within days, things appear to have taken a twist. As tweeted out by Cesar Luis Merlo, Celtic made an offer for Bernabei which Lanus consider insufficient. If an improved proposal is made, the Argentine club would be willing to part ways with the left-back.

Celtic’s offer for Argentine left-back has fallen short of the mark

It looks like Celtic will have to up their transfer offer if they are to sign Bernabei from Lanus. Thus, while a move is still very much possible, it is safe to say that it is not nearly as close as it was originally believed to be.

It remains to be seen if Celtic can ultimately get a deal for Bernabei over the line. He is not the only left-back they have been linked with recently though.

Some of the names that come to mind are that of Mohanad Jeahze of Hammarby, Erick Otieno of AIK and Francisco Ortega of Velez Sarsfield. Thus, it looks like the Hoops are keeping their options open when it comes to their chase for a left-back and won’t be putting all their eggs in one basket.
