While no major changes are required at Celtic this season, every summer is one of transformation for a club of this size, where players come and go on a consistent basis. One of the biggest issues that the Hoops have had in recent years is their inability to keep hold of some of their most highly-rated young players. Yet, their strategy in bringing them through into the first-team picture has been confusing at the same time.

Not many youngsters have gotten a lot of first-team chances in recent seasons. Ben Doak was an exception last season and even he ended up deciding to join Liverpool.

One of the most confusing Celtic careers in recent years has been that of Luca Connell. He never made a single appearance for the senior team till now, even though he has been highly rated since his arrival at Parkhead.

And now, as reported by Independent.ie, Celtic have decided to release Connell. His initial three-year deal was up and although the Hoops had the option of extending it for another year, they have not picked that up. As a result, the midfielder is a free agent.

Celtic’s decision to let the midfielder go and his entire career at Parkhead is confusing

Connell had broken into the Bolton Wanderers first-team as a teenager and had made several appearances for their senior team at the Championship level before joining Celtic in the summer of 2019.

He was 18 years of age at that point and it looked like the sky was the limit for the Republic of Ireland youth international. Things did not go as planned at Parkhead though and it is hard to understand why.

Connell was immensely impressive in pre-season a couple of years back and had very good loan spells away at Queen’s Park as well. Yet, he never made a competitive appearance for Celtic.

Thus, there is a good chance that this could turn out to be a major mistake on the part of Celtic and Connell could end up proving himself, wherever he ends up next.
