Former Celtic star named ‘biggest letdown’ of the season

Celtic lost a number of their key stars over the course of the previous summer transfer window. What made things even more difficult was the fact that they were coming off of a season where they had finished 25 points behind the Rangers. But incredibly, it does not look like they have felt the absence of any of them, as Ange Postecoglou has guided the club to a Premiership and League Cup double.

One of the big names to leave Celtic last summer was Odsonne Edouard, who had been the main man for the club for much of his stint at Parkhead. Towards the end of his time with the Hoops though, his influence faded significantly.

You can’t deny his goal scoring record in the Hoops. It was pretty sensational as was the quality of some of his goals, like the very cool Panenka penalty past Craig Gordon in a Scottish Cup final. Ultimately, according to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 86 goals for Celtic in 179 appearances.

Amid many rumours of him seeking a move away from Parkhead in his last couple of seasons in Glasgow, his form seemed to decline and he was often criticised for his performances. By the time he joined Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021, not many Celtic fans were devastated to see him go.

Patrick Vieira brought Edouard off the bench to make his Crystal Palace debut against Tottenham Hotspur and the Frenchman started in the most incredible fashion possible, scoring a brace after coming on in the 84th minute.

But the good start didn’t last long and his season at Selhurst Park has been disappointing and he was seen less and less in the Crystal Palace line up as the season played out.

In the 2021/22 season review of Crystal Palace from the Evening Standard, Edouard was named as the biggest letdown, as the report read:

"Biggest letdown: Odsonne EdouardHis move has not worked out brilliantly and a tame performance in the FA Cup semi-final at the end of a brilliant Palace run edges this."

Disappointing indeed but not exactly a surprise considering his latter performances for Celtic. Edouard has undoubted talent and potential, but he just has not been able to get it going for Crystal Palace. Perhaps, he was not quite ready for the Premier League.
