Defence was viewed as an area of weakness for Celtic not too long ago but the arrivals of Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Josip Juranovic have gone a long way in solidifying things at the back to the point where it is not a huge worry for them any more. Yet, there is still a need to continue improving and strengthening, especially with Champions League football to navigate through next season.

The good news is that recent rumours have suggested that Carter-Vickers is closing in on a permanent move to Parkhead. But on the other hand, Christopher Jullien has been heavily linked with a move away from the club recently, having failed to break into Ange Postecoglou’s first-team plans after returning from his long-term injury and only made a solitary appearance for the senior side in the 2021/22 campaign.

On the other hand, Stephen Welsh does not look like someone who can be a regular starter for the club right now. Thus, if either Starfelt or Carter-Vickers, if he does sign permanently, get injured, Celtic could find themselves in trouble.

Thus, do not be surprised to see them sign a centre-back in the summer. They have already been linked with Ko Itakura. And now, as reported by Sky Sports (via 67 Hail Hail), Celtic are also monitoring Manchester City’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Celtic have their eyes on another Manchester City defender

It is unlikely that Celtic will go after two centre-backs this summer, thus, they might be looking to sign either Itakura or Harwood-Bellis.

Itakura spent the season on loan at Schalke and the German club, who won promotion to the Bundesliga recently, have an option to buy. But it is believed that they could struggle to meet that figure in the current financial climate, meaning that the door might possibly open up for Celtic to make a move.

On the other hand, Harwood-Bellis is just 20 years of age and is only expected to be available on loan. He is very highly rated and already has a bit of varied experience under his belt, having had temporary stays at Stoke City, Anderlecht and Blackburn Rovers till now. He has also represented England at multiple youth levels.

Celtic have Champions League group stage football to offer and also have shared a good relationship with Manchester City over the years. Thus, bringing in either of those players could be very possible for the Hoops this summer.
