Former Celtic star makes Scottish Premiership return

One of the areas that was a major weakness for Celtic last season was goalkeeper. The club had tried to bring back Fraser Forster, after a successful loan spell from Southampton in the 2019/20 campaign, but the Englishman decided to remain at St Mary’s Stadium instead. As a result, the club were forced to look elsewhere and ultimately shelled out a transfer fee believed to be around €4.5 million to bring Vasilis Barkas to Parkhead.

We all know how that worked and the Greek international is expected to leave in the upcoming summer transfer window, and will go down in history as a major Celtic transfer mistake unless something unexpected happens moving forward.

During that period of time, Celtic were also linked with a move for former goalkeeper, David Marshall, who had enjoyed a solid career down South after departing Parkhead in 2007.

In hindsight, it might have worked out better if the club had brought back the goalkeeper who had come through the Celtic youth ranks. And while a return to Parkhead might have never materialised, he is now back in Scottish football.

Former Celtic star completes return to Scottish football

As tweeted out by Hibernian, Marshall will join the club and has signed a two-year deal with them:

Now 37 years of age, it would be safe to say that Marshall is well past his prime as a footballer. His last club was Queens Park Rangers.

On the other hand, Celtic themselves have a senior goalkeeper in between the posts in Joe Hart, who is 35 years of age himself. But the Manchester City legend has done a brilliant job since arriving last summer, both as a player and as a leader.

That is exactly what the club needed, with Scott Brown having left last summer. Also, considering how Hart has been playing, there is no reason for him not to be a starter for a season or two more.
