Former Celtic star reveals he regrets not making Parkhead return

Several players have left Celtic over the years to play football in a different league. Some have succeeded while many have failed, and some have even come back to Parkhead for a second stint with the Hoops. And it is safe to say that very few have had anything bad to say about their time playing for the Glasgow giants.

Aiden McGeady had come through the youth ranks at Celtic and established himself as a star at the club after breaking into the first-team picture for the Hoops.

He would ultimately leave the club in a then Scottish record transfer to go to Russia and play for Spartak Moscow. That is not a route that many had taken in the past. Since then, he has played for several English clubs like Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End, Charlton Athletic and Sunderland.

Since then, McGeady has revealed that he had an opportunity to return to Celtic during Ronny Deila’s time as the manager but the timing was not right for him to make the move back to Glasgow. He has admitted though that he regrets the fact that he will never play for the Hoops again.

Former Celtic star admits that he regrets that he will never play for the club again

As reported by the Daily Record, while speaking on BBC Sportsound, McGready said:

"“I regret it in the fact that I will never play for Celtic again, yeah.“But at the time, no. I didn’t regret it at the time.“Looking back now, the success that Celtic have had the last six, seven years it would have been great to go back.“I’d have loved to have played for Celtic again at some point but I think that is done now.”"

A return for McGeady to Celtic no longer seems on the cards and it is safe to say that ship has sailed by this point of time. He could someday return in a different role though.

He was a very important part of the team during the time that he was at the club and at one point of time, he was arguably the best player in Scottish football. He would go on to have a very good career even after leaving Celtic but he could have won a lot of silverware if he had made a return to the club when the window was still open.
