One of Celtic’s biggest problems for quite a few years now has been their inability to hold on to some of their most promising youngsters. As a result, we have seen them leave for clubs like Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Leeds United and others. And the latest name on that list is that of Ben Doak, who is headed for Liverpool.

Doak came through the club’s youth ranks and was rated as one of the best youngsters that Celtic had produced in years. He was even handed his first-team debut at 16 years of age.

But now, Doak is set to join Liverpool. On the other hand, it looks like Celtic have found a player who they view as the young Scot’s replacement.

As reported by Football Scotland, Celtic have registered an interest in Cardiff City’s Japhet Matondo and he could be considered as a replacement for Doak. He has already played for the club’s under-23s side and represented Wales at the under-17s level. Thus, it is safe to say that he is a very highly-rated youngster as well. Leeds United are also believed to be keeping an eye on the situation though.

Celtic have eyes on potential replacement for Doak, who is headed for Liverpool

It is safe to say that nobody would expect the 16-year-old to come in from Cardiff City and make an immediate impact on the Celtic first-team. But it does look like he has plenty of potential and could be a good long-term signing. If the club are able to pull a move off, it is more than likely that he would start at the B-team level.

Matondo is considered as a left winger, although he has the ability to play on the right flank as well.

Of course, it won’t be easy for Celtic to sign him with Leeds United also believed to have an interest. But if they are able to bring him to Parkhead, it can prove to be a brilliant move on the part of the Hoops.
