Celtic have done a wonderful job when it comes to recruitment since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager. But one mistake that they made without a shadow of a doubt is signing James McCarthy as a free agent and then handing him a four-year deal. The Republic of Ireland international was a top player in his prime but has struggled with injuries for quite a few years now, as his best looks to be behind him.

As many would have expected, the move has not worked out and McCarthy has barely featured for Postecoglou’s side in recent times. He will still have three years left on his deal as we enter the summer, leaving Celtic in a difficult position.

Now though, it looks like Celtic could be about to make a similar mistake. They confirmed on Twitter that James Forrest has signed a new contract extension with the club for a further three years, which will keep him at Parkhead till the summer of 2025.

Forrest has struggled with both form and fitness for the past two years though, spending several spells out on the sidelines and is nowhere near being a regular starter at the moment.

Are Celtic making a major mistake by giving Forrest a long-term deal?

Under normal circumstances, it would have made all the sense in the world to hand a 30-year-old Forrest a three-year deal.

Unfortunately though, he has not been a key player for this team for a couple of years now and even before that, there were quite a few questions about his form and his ability to rise up to the occasion against the big teams.

Thus, it will be very interesting to see how things turn out for Forrest moving forward. We can only hope that he is able to remain injury free and make a bigger impact on the first-team in the upcoming seasons.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Forrest made 32 appearances but featured for just 1609 minutes of football this season for Celtic, scoring 4 goals and providing 5 assists in the process of doing so.
