When Ange Postecoglou was brought in as manager, it is safe to say that very few Celtic fans were excited about the prospect. The club had been linked with the much more highly rated Eddie Howe for months before that failed to transpire, leaving the Hoops in a terrible spot to be in. They moved quickly and appointed the former Australian national team boss, who was with Yokohama F. Marinos at that point of time.

He was not a household name in Europe by any stretch of the imagination despite enjoying success in management in both Australia and Japan. And the start that Celtic endured under Postecoglou, getting knocked out early from the UEFA Champions League qualifiers and losing three of their six league games, only led to fears about how the season would turn out for them.

Many predicted that Postecoglou would be shown the exit door in the middle of the season itself and quite a few questioned whether the team was good enough to even finish second in the Premiership this time around.

Less than a year later, Celtic stand as champions of Scotland, having gotten the job done with a game to go, following their 1-1 draw against Dundee United. And Postecoglou has firmly established himself as a cult figure amongst the fans after leading the Hoops to do an incredibly unlikely double in his first season in charge.

Postecoglou sends emotional message after Celtic title win

Postecoglou appeared to get emotional after Celtic were crowned champions. As reported by The Scotsman, he said:

"“It’s hard for me to comprehend. I’ve had this lifelong dream to manage a world famous club, trying to make an impact. I’m in this spot now of achieving something I’ve always wanted to achieve. I guess it’s a weird kind of feeling for me.“I’ve done about ten terrible interviews and this won’t impress anyone either. It’s fair to say it’s taken every ounce of me. I’ve put everything into it because I knew how big a challenge it was.”"

It is not hard to understand why Postecoglou would be emotional about this moment. For years, he had been considered as the greatest manager that Australia had ever produced.

And on several occasions, he was linked with clubs in Europe, without ever getting the chance to show what he was capable of at this stage. Celtic finally gave him the opportunity and it is safe to say that he has taken it with both hands.

Celtic fans can only hope that this is only the beginning of the Postecoglou era at Parkhead.
