Celtic’s three transfer priorities this summer revealed

We are now seeing more rumours of Celtic’s transfer activity in the upcoming summer window and news about what Ange Postecoglou sees as his priorities to improve this squad, with there believed to be three. But does this possibly signal some departures of already established players?

Celtic fans have often felt frustrated by the slow nature of transfer business at the club in the past but were excited by the swift deals put in place for Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate in the January window. It was so fast that these three signings were all announced before the window had even opened.

That’s got fans very hopeful that Postecoglou is ushering in a new era of what may be more decisive and swift approach to recruitment. Recent rumours of Celtic tracking Iraqi left-back Mohanad Jeahze have been met with positivity. Plus we all wait eagerly for news on whether either or both Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers will put pen to paper on permanent deals.

And now, it looks like the club have three priorities in the summer transfer window. As reported by The Athletic (via Fox Sports), they are a ball-playing centre-back, a left-back and a right winger. That will remain the case no matter what happens with Jota and Carter-Vickers.

Seeking a ball-playing centre-back certainly fits with Postecoglou’s style of play. It may suggest though that Christopher Jullien doesn’t have a long-term future at the club, having not featured much despite returning from his injury.

A left-back is definitely needed to provide more competition for Greg Taylor and better cover in the position. It ties in neatly with the rumours about there being interest in Jeahze, currently playing for Hammarby in Sweden.

Strengthening the right wing position might be key as well and also provide an alternative to Liel Abada, but it also raises questions over the future of James Forrest, who has struggled in recent years.

While it is always exciting to see new players join, it is often tinged with sadness at excellent and incredibly successful players seeing their Celtic careers draw to a close. But if it means that the squad will improve, then some tough decisions need to be taken.
