Most Celtic fans would not have any kind of fondness for Steven Gerrard, after seeing him manage the Rangers for more than three years, during which time he was able to guide the Ibrox side to the top of Scottish football while also stopping the Hoops from winning a historic 10th straight league title. The manager left in the middle of the current season though in order to take the Aston Villa job.
During his time managing the Rangers, Gerrard won only one single trophy and most other managers would not have been given the time that he got. The only one that he did win though was a big one and hurt Celtic fans more than most other ever could.
Now, Gerrard is outside of the Celtic-Rangers bubble though and he has surprisingly admitted that he would have liked to play for either of them, after he left Liverpool.
As reported by Football Scotland, while speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, the former Rangers manager said:
"“Up there Celtic v Rangers, it’s constant. In press conferences, in the streets or the supermarket.“It’s intense. It’s an intense rivalry. And unless you are actually in it you don’t realise how intense.“I can say this now because I am out of it, both atmospheres are sensational. Really top.“I almost say to myself now, out of hindsight, should I maybe have gone up to one of them rather than go to America.”"
Gerrard makes incredible Celtic admission after leaving the Rangers
Not many would have expected Gerrard to make such an admission about Celtic so soon after leaving the Rangers.
Despite his history with the Ibrox side, nobody can deny that Gerrard was one of the best players of his generation and if he did decide to come to Scotland, it is expected that both Glasgow clubs would have jumped at the opportunity, even though he was in the last phase of his career when he left Liverpool to join LA Galaxy.
Gerrard would only play a short time for LA Galaxy before hanging up his boots and moving into management instead.
Since leaving the Rangers, he has had a mixed time at Aston Villa though and it will be very interesting to see what the future holds for him in management.
