Rangers could suffer £5 million blow for pulling out of Celtic friendly

A game between Celtic and the Rangers will always attract the attention and anticipation amongst the fans. And the excitement is not just restricted to Europe as the importance of the rivalry reaches every part of the globe. In an attempt to demonstrate this, both teams were set to take part in a friendly, in the Sydney Super Cup, in November of this year in Australia.

Since the announcement, the competition has been marked as the homecoming tour for Ange Postecoglou by the media. But the fans from the blue side of Glasgow did not seem too amused with it, believing their club was left playing second fiddle.

This led to protests and demonstrations from the Rangers supporters and eventually, the Ibrox club decided to pull out of the Sydney Super Cup.

This could end up having major implications on their future though. Understandably, the organisers of the Sydney Super Cup did not seem happy with the decision. As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, co-promoters TEG Sport and Left Field Live said in a statement:

"“We were disappointed to wake up this morning to Rangers FC’s statement that it will not be participating in the Sydney Super Cup.“The Rangers board committed to these matches following extensive negotiations over eight months. Seemingly in response to negative fan reaction, they have pulled out of their contracted commitment.“We have worked closely with all stakeholders to bring this exciting event to Sydney and we refute any suggestions that we were unwilling to fulfil our commitments to Rangers. We have acted in good faith and have put the event on sale with a great response from fans here.“In changing their minds, the Rangers board has let down many fans in Australia and the Asian region. We will now consult with our stakeholders before determining our response.”"

There have been suggestions that the organisers could take legal action against Rangers over this withdrawal from the competition.

And as reported by the Daily Record, the organisers believe that they are due a staggering £5 million for breach of contract.

Thus, it is safe to say that the Rangers could find themselves in a pretty difficult situation in the near future, if they indeed have to shell out £5 million for pulling out of the Sydney Super Cup.

On the other hand, it is believed that the organisers will be looking to arrange a replacement for the Rangers to fill in against Celtic. That is great news for the Hoops, because this is a lucrative tour for the club.
