Rangers have already announced that they are pulling out of the upcoming Sydney Super Cup meaning that the friendly against Celtic in Australia is now off the table. Neither set of fans were too pleased about the idea of a ‘friendly’ Glasgow Derby, but it did appear that the Ibrox fans were the unhappier of the two, as the entire tournament was being labelled as the Ange Homecoming Tour by many.

As a result, it looked like the Rangers were set to play second fiddle to Celtic. And on top of that, suggestions were that the Hoops were set to receive a significantly higher participation fee than their Glasgow rivals.

With the Rangers pulling out, it is safe to say that the future of the Sydney Super Cup is pretty much up in the air. Will there be a replacement or will the entire thing be potentially called off?

As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, it is anticipated that the organisers will seek a replacement team to fill in for the Rangers.

Who could replace the Rangers in friendly against Celtic in Australia?

Some rumours have broken out on social media that Sporting CP are being targeted as the potential replacement for the Rangers in the Sydney Super Cup.

If that turns out to be the case then one can look forward to a compelling game of football between two sides in Green and White, away in Australia. But at this stage, it might be better to take the rumour with a pinch of salt before something more concrete does not emerge.

One thing is for sure though, it would be great news for Celtic if the Sydney Super Cup goes forward later this year, as it is believed to be a lucrative deal for the club and could hand them a major cash boost.
