Seamus Coleman makes admission about Celtic legend

Seamus Coleman is someone who has been linked with a move to Celtic for years, without it ever transpiring, as he has gone on to carve out a tremendous career for himself at Everton. The Republic of Ireland international joined the Merseyside club back in 2009 and has gone on to become their captain. He has never made any secret of his love for the Hoops though.

In fact, when Nathan Patterson switched Ibrox for Goodison Park, that was one of the first stories that surfaced about how Coleman had told the Scottish youngster about his Celtic loyalties.

Of course, that should not come as a surprise to anyone, with a number of Irish players supporting Celtic. Not many would have forgotten about Shane Duffy’s loan move to the club last season.

And now, Coleman has revealed that he had been helped by Packie Bonner, while he was just a youngster growing up in Donegal. As reported by the Irish Mirror, he said:

"“Packie Bonner for us young lads growing up in Donegal, he gave up plenty of his time.“He came to our local club St Catherine’s to put on training sessions. He was always very good with his time and we all remember the penalty save.”"

Celtic fans today have an interesting view of Bonner and many feel that he was not that great of a goalkeeper.

While that is an opinion that can be debated upon, the fact of the matter is that he was a part of Celtic’s first-team picture for two decades, and was part of some good times as well as some unsuccessful times in the history of the club.

He was a regular for the Republic of Ireland national team as well and was even on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or in 1989, finishing in 17th.

Thus, Bonner deserves a lot of respect for the job that he did during his time at Celtic and is a legend at the club. Also, stories like Coleman’s show how open he was about giving back to the game.
