During his time at Celtic, it had looked like Patrick Roberts was destined to be a superstar. But since then, he has ended up becoming one of the ‘what could have been’ stories in football. For years, he was at Manchester City but never managed to make a mark on their first-team, only featuring a few times for them. And after his loan spell at Parkhead came to an end, he has never been able to make his mark elsewhere.

Roberts has spent time out on loan at several clubs, both in England and abroad. But other than Celtic, he has never scored more than once for any other team at the senior level till now.

Roberts’ long but fruitless time at Manchester City would come to an end in January of this year, as he completed a move to League One side, Sunderland.

And while speaking with the Sunderland Echo, he has admitted that his best football came at Celtic:

"“My best football came when I was playing in front of 60,000 fans in Scotland. I come here and there are 30,000 at the Stadium of Light and it’s the same kind of feeling, just obviously a different league.”"

But at the same time, he also believes that he is a better player now than he was during his spell at Celtic:

"“I’d say I’m probably even better. Obviously I’m older now, when I was younger I was maybe a bit sharper.“With the run I’ve had in the team at the moment I’m just getting to my best football and I can only get better.”"

For certain spells at Celtic, Roberts was absolutely brilliant and it had felt like he was destined for footballing superstardom.

Many might have forgotten but when he had joined Celtic, he was just a teenager. And even now, he is just 25 years of age.

Thus, there is plenty of time for Roberts to turn his career around if he can find his best form once again. But there might not be a lot of opportunities at the top level left, as he has been at a series of clubs without ever really making a proper impact.

Thus, the former Celtic star has to make his chance at Sunderland count. We can only wish him the best of luck.
