There have been plenty of twists and turns since Celtic confirmed their place in the Sydney Super Cup, set to be played in Australia later this year, when there is a gap in the club footballing calendar due to the World Cup. Now though, it looks like the Rangers could be potentially looking for a way to back out of the friendly tournament.

Both clubs did not please its fans with the decision to face each other in a friendly game away in Australia.

But the Rangers supporters seemed to be unhappier of the two, considering how the whole tournament was being promoted as Ange’s Homecoming Tour. Rumours also suggested that they were set to receive a much lower fee than Celtic.

As reported by the Daily Record, the Ibrox board have been considering pulling out of the tournament after how their fans have reacted to the idea of a friendly against Celtic. Suggestions in Australia are though that they would be hit with a seven figure penalty if they do that.

Rangers are reportedly considering backing out of Celtic friendly in Australia

Not many people would have expected this to be a possibility, but now, it looks like the Rangers are considering pulling out of the Sydney Super Cup. They cannot take a seven figure penalty lightly though, especially considering their financial troubles over the years.

Let’s see what the future holds. For the time being, no step has been officially taken regarding the controversial match.

For Celtic, a Postecoglou homecoming trip to Australia still seems like a great idea, whether their Glasgow rivals are involved or not. If the Rangers do end up completing a U-turn and pulling out, one would hope that the organisers will be able to arrange for a suitable replacement. There are not any lack of interesting matchups involving the Hoops.
