Ange, Maeda and more: 3 things we learned from Celtic vs Bodo/Glimt

On a night that the Rangers pulled off a huge win away in Germany against Borussia Dortmund, Celtic left a lot to be desired. Ange Postecoglou’s side were handed a convincing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League tie. And with a tough away trip to Norway still to be played, it could be as good as over for the Hoops in Europe this season.

Coming into the game, Celtic would have known that Bodo/Glimt were a good side. But on this occasion, they were not able to raise their game to match their visitors.

Bodo/Glimt scored early and then twice in the second half, while Celtic could only get one through Daizen Maeda but that proved to be a consolation on the night.

It was a blow to the confidence of a team that had been doing tremendously heading into this game. But it is clear that Postecoglou’s side still have a long way to go.

Postecoglou gets it wrong

Postecoglou has not gotten a lot of things wrong during his time as Celtic manager. Unfortunately, the line up against Bodo/Glimt proved to be one of them.

The manager sprang up a couple of surprises. The biggest one was dropping Reo Hatate and starting Tom Rogic and Matt O’Riley together.

While both had done brilliantly in recent weeks, they had not featured together. And it also tweaked with the system a bit. On the other hand, Maeda was handed the duty of leading the line ahead of Giorgos Giakoumakis.

It is safe to say that neither decision quite worked out in the end as the Hoops struggled on the night to get it going against Bodo/Glimt.
