Neil Lennon enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at Celtic as a manager. But after how the 2020/21 season turned out, it feels like his time in the Parkhead hot seat will always be defined by the failed quest to win 10IAR. The Hoops finished 25 points behind the Rangers in the previous campaign, and the Northern Irishman would step up down from his role in February.

Since then he has made it no secret that he would be interested in getting back into management but till now, he has not ended up at any club, despite there being links with teams in Scotland as well as those down South.

Recently, rumours had emerged that he was one of the front names in the running to become the next Sunderland manager. But it appears that Lennon has suffered a massive blow in that quest.

As reported by Sky Sports, Alex Neil will take charge of Sunderland after an agreement was reached on Thursday night.

Lennon suffers Sunderland blow as post-Celtic struggles continue

After spending a decade straight in the Premier League, Sunderland have faced some struggles in recent years and have slid down the English footballing pyramid to League One.

They appear to have high hopes of getting promoted to the Championship in the near future though and currently sit at 4th in the League One table. Thus, it could have certainly been an interesting project for Lennon to take on.

But the former Celtic manager has suffered another blow in his quest to return to management. And at the moment, it does feel like Scotland might be his best shot when it comes to finding a new club.

On the other hand, Celtic appear to have found a tremendous successor to Lennon, in the form of Ange Postecoglou, who has been nothing short of brilliant since arriving at Parkhead in the summer.
