Celtic pulled off some brilliant loan deals of their own in the summer, by bringing in Jota from Benfica and Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham Hotspur. Both players have been absolute standouts for the Hoops this season and played a massive part in their successes under the management of Ange Postecoglou till now. The club are expected to try to sign them on a permanent basis.

On the other hand, Celtic have sent out several of their own youngsters out on loan as well. And while some moves have proven to be fruitful, others have not.

One player who has struggled out on loan is Jonathan Afolabi. The forward had arrived at Celtic in the summer of 2019 with a lot of expectations but has not been able to make his mark till now.

And as tweeted out by Anthony Joseph, Afolabi has been recalled from his loan spell at Ayr United and he will now join Airdrieonians instead:

Celtic forward’s loan spell has been cut short

Afolabi had arrived at Celtic with a lot of expectations with many believing that he could eventually make his mark for the senior team.

It is safe to say that the youngster has left a lot to be desired though and things have not quite gone his way till now. It remains to be seen what the future holds. But till now, he has been one in a long list of project signings that Celtic have made in recent times which have not worked out for the Hoops.

It will be interesting to see how things turn out for him out on loan at Airdrieonians. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored just one goal in 16 appearances for Ayr United this season. And now 22 years of age, Afolabi needs to start performing soon. His current deal with Celtic is believed to be running out in the summer of 2023.
