It’s been a difficult time for Leigh Griffiths over the last couple of years culminating in him being released from his contract by Celtic early and his loan at Dundee FC also coming to an end after disappointing performances. There is still a scenario though where we could see him return to Parkhead this season, but in opposition colours, to face his former side.

Griffiths is a free agent now and without a club. Although he hasn’t performed well in recent times, he has shown his goal scoring abilities in the past and it’s quite possible that he’ll be picked up by another Scottish club in need of a striker.

Right now, St Mirren look like a potential destination for Griffiths after Eamonn Brophy suffered a possible long-term injury.

As reported by BBC, St Mirren manager, Jim Goodwin, admitted that Griffiths is a player who they could end up turning towards and is on the list:

"“We’re waiting on scan results but it doesn’t look great.“If it’s going to be four or five weeks out then we’ll go to the free agent market.“He [Griffiths] is on the list. He’s a free agent and I know there are a number of clubs who are speaking to him at the minute. We’ll wait and see what comes from that.”"

Could the former Celtic star join St Mirren?

Alongside St Mirren, Falkirk are also believed to be interested and rejoining Dundee FC isn’t completely out of the question either.

Depending on how all that plays out, it does mean that we could yet see Griffiths back on the Celtic Park pitch, but in opposition colours. The Hoops have home matches against Dundee on 20 February and St Mirren on 2 March.

Previously, of course, when out on loan, the player could not line up against Celtic in matches. That all ended with him being released and as a result, one cannot rule out the possibility of him featuring against his former side before this season comes to an end.

Many Celtic fans have felt let down by Griffiths over the years, while others choose to remember the great goals that he scored for the club. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of reaction he gets if he does step back onto the Parkhead pitch in the future.
