While Neil Lennon might have won a lot of silverware as the manager of Celtic, his time at Parkhead did not come to the end that he would have been hoping for. With the chance of winning a historic 10IAR up for grabs, the Hoops struggled massively and the Northern Irishman stepped down from his role in the middle of the campaign. Ultimately, the club would finish 25 points behind the Rangers and without a single trophy in 2020/21.
Thus, it is safe to say that Lennon’s reputation as a manager took quite a hit in the previous season and he has not been back in management ever since.
He has never made it a secret though that he wants to be back in the managerial hot seat eventually and has been linked with the Sunderland job recently.
As reported by the Daily Record, Lennon has admitted that he is interested in the job as well:
"“It’s a big club with a fantastic fanbase. They’re in a reasonably good position in the league, so that would definitely be one I’d be interested in.”"
Former Celtic manager admits that he is interested in Sunderland job
Sunderland had been a Premier League club for a decade straight but have been going through some rough times recently and currently find themselves in League One.
It is safe to say though that they will be looking to climb up the English footballing pyramid as soon as possible. Now, it remains to be seen if Lennon ends up being appointed as their manager.
Another former Celtic player in the form of Roy Keane has also been linked with the vacant managerial hot seat at Sunderland recently as well.
On the other hand, Celtic appear to have found a long-term manager of their own in the form of Ange Postecoglou, who has done an incredible job of turning things around at Parkhead after the Hoops’ disappointing 2020/21 season. He has already delivered silverware in the form of the Scottish League Cup and has the club competing for the Premiership as well.
