Celtic fans would have had their heads in their hands when Callum McGregor was forced off the pitch against Alloa Athletic in their fourth round Scottish Cup tie. The captain has been one of the club’s most important and consistent players for years now and it is safe to say that they are going to miss him, as suggestions have been that he will be out of action for a while. Rumours have even suggested that the midfielder will have to undergo surgery.

It goes without saying that the situation is far from ideal for Celtic and one will be hoping that McGregor makes a full recovery and is back on the pitch as soon as possible.

Initially, it had looked like he had suffered a head injury against Alloa Athletic but since then, it has emerged that it was a facial injury. According to some rumours, the Celtic captain has a fractured cheekbone although it remains to be seen if that is the case.

Ange Postecoglou did give a promising update on the situation although he did not put a timeline on when McGregor could be back in action. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he told Celtic TV:

"“He’s better today. He wasn’t in great shape straight after the game. He probably had a slight concussion as well so he wasn’t in great shape. But I exchanged messages with him yesterday and he feels a bit better which is great. Hopefully his recovery doesn’t take too long.“You always fear the worst. Knowing the type of character Callum is, for him to stay down and to be fair he didn’t go all the way down – he’s as brave as they come – so for him to come off we knew it was something significant.”"

It remains to be seen how things turn out for McGregor but one has to admit that that the injury could not have come at a worse time for Celtic either.

The club face a very tough away trip to Hearts, who currently sit at third in the Premiership table and are a team in form. And then, following a visit from Dundee United. Celtic will take on the Rangers at Parkhead, in one of the most important matches of the season which could end up having major implications on the title race.

It was always going to be a tough run for Celtic and McGregor’s injury has only made things tougher for them.
