Callum McGregor was forced off the pitch against Alloa Athletic in Celtic’s Scottish Cup fourth round tie. Initially, it had looked like it was a head injury for the club captain but since then, suggestions have been that it was a facial injury instead. And there had been fears that he had broken a bone and might be out for a significant length of time.

There is no question about the fact that McGregor is one of Celtic’s most important players right now and has been for a while. Thus, him missing any significant number of matches would be a huge blow to their title hopes.

Now though, it does look like the club have been handed that blow and could possibly be without McGregor for a while.

As reported by VideoCelts, McGregor underwent surgery on his cheekbone today.

Shock report emerges about Celtic captain undergoing surgery

It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal. If the Celtic captain has indeed undergone surgery on his cheekbone, then he would be expected to be out of action for a while now.

And it goes without saying that Celtic will miss his presence in the middle of the park if that is the case.

Let’s wait and see as things unfold though and more updates emerge regarding McGregor’s situation.

Things are not looking very promising at the moment though and Postecoglou had not seemed to be in a positive mood about the situation following the Scottish Cup tie either.

In the current situation, the best that one can do is hope that things work out and McGregor is back on the pitch as soon as possible. With David Turnbull out with an injury and Tom Rogic set to leave for international duty, Celtic could be without three of their most regular midfielders in the upcoming games and might have to rely on new signings.
