Callum McGregor has been a regular part of Celtic’s starting XI for years now and one of the club’s most consistent performers. As a result, the Hoops are expected to feel his absence more than that of most players, especially since he has taken over the captain’s armband as well. As a result, Ange Postecoglou was handed a major worry when the midfielder was forced off the pitch against Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Cup.

McGregor appeared to have suffered a head injury at first but since then suggestions have emerged that it was a facial injury instead. There are also some fears that he might have potentially broken a bone.

If that turns out to be the case, the Celtic captain could be out for a while, which could end up being a season changing injury blow for the Hoops, who are already missing the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and David Turnbull while Tom Rogic and Daizen Maeda will be heading out on international duty.

Former Celtic star, Peter Grant, made a worrying revelation from a similar injury he had suffered. As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, he told BBC Sportscene:

"“At first I thought it was a head clash and then I was concerned when I saw Callum holding the side of his face.“I broke a bone there once myself and it was six to eight weeks that I was out for.“So that is my concern and when you look at the manager afterwards it’s the most disappointed I have seen him since he came.“So you can tell that Callum has picked up a bad injury.”"

If McGregor ends up missing significant time, it would be a massive blow for Celtic and their title hopes.

McGregor is one of the most important players in this team for sure. And at the same time, Turnbull and Rogic are going to be unavailable for the upcoming games as well.

The midfield trio of McGregor, Rogic and Turnbull is the one that Postecoglou has relied on most often this season till now and it looks like he is set to miss all three for a while. As a result, the manager might very well have to rely of new arrivals like Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and Yosuke Ideguchi to get him through this situation even though none of them have gotten much time to adjust to the Scottish game.
