Celtic captain makes Brendan Rodgers influence claim

Callum McGregor has risen through the youth ranks at Celtic to become the captain of the club. And the midfielder has already lifted his first trophy with the armband, having won the Scottish League Cup earlier in the campaign, which was also Ange Postecoglou’s first piece of silverware as the manager of the Hoops. Now though, the focus must turn towards more, with the Premiership clearly being the big one up for grabs.

Celtic have appeared to make a lot of strides forward since last season and currently sit 6 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership table. And although that is a significant gap between the two sides, it is not something that cannot be overturned, especially with almost half the league games still left to be played including three Glasgow derbies.

The Hoops will definitely need the leadership of McGregor though, if they are to end up back at the top of Scottish football by the end of the campaign.

The club captain has revealed his two biggest influences in this regard in the form of Brendan Rodgers and Scott Brown. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he told Celtic’s official YouTube channel:

"“I’ve had two of the best influences with Brendan [Rodgers] and Scott [Brown] as well.“I had them take you on to that sort of leadership, how to speak to people, how to behave. A lot of it’s down to the people that influence you as well.”"

Brown’s influence is self explanatory. He had been the captain of Celtic for years and surely would have had an influence on the majority of the players who represented the Hoops during that period of time.

On the other hand, Celtic enjoyed some of their biggest successes of all-time under the management of Rodgers. But he is not remembered as fondly as he should be because of the manner of his exit, as he left the club in the middle of the season to join Leicester City.

There were a lot of doubts raised about McGregor as captain when he first received the armband, thanks in large part due to him not being a vocal leader in the same vein as Brown. But one has to admit that till now, the Scottish international has done a wonderful job.
