At the start of the season, Celtic produced a bit of a surprise by handing Leigh Griffiths a one year contract extension. The Scottish striker had been the best player in the Premiership when he was at the top of his game but that was a long time back. In recent years, he had failed to rediscover that kind of form except for a short spell in the 2019/20 campaign. He is still just 31 years of age though.

The move did make some sense at that point of time. Odsonne Edouard was expected to leave the club in the summer, which he ultimately did. On the other hand, Griffiths was the most experienced striker available at Parkhead.

It is safe to say that things have not gone to plan since then for either Celtic or Griffiths. And not too long afterwards, he was sent on a season-long loan to Dundee FC.

He has struggled there as well and there have been rumours that Dundee FC could potentially send Griffiths back to Celtic this month. Ange Postecoglou does not appear to have the striker in his plans though. As reported by The National, when asked about the 31-year-old, the manager said:

"“He’ll probably be looking at opportunities elsewhere.”"

There is no doubt about the fact that at the top of his game, Griffiths is a brilliant player. But after years of struggles, one has to wonder whether he is still capable of rediscovering his best form.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored just 2 goals in 14 appearances for Dundee FC this season, which is far from what they would have expected when they signed him on loan in the summer.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Griffiths and things could get interesting if he is indeed sent back to Celtic this month.
